At least eleven people lost their lives on Tuesday afternoon when a fire erupted while they were siphoning fuel from an overturned tanker.
Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Patrick Onyango briefed that the incident occurred around 3pm in Kigogwa Town along the Kampala-Bombo road.
A fuel tanker, registration number UAM 292Q, was travelling from Kampala to Gulu when the driver lost control, overturned it without casualties and fled from the scene.
In the ensuing chaos, mobs rushed to siphon fuel from the tanker.
“Unfortunately, those who rushed to siphon fuel from the tanker were the most affected, and these victims were burnt beyond recognition,” Onyango said.
Four buildings housing nine shops were destroyed in the blaze, and electric lines were also affected, along with other properties worth millions of shillings.
