COURT SENTENCES A 22YR OLD MAN TO FIVE YEARS IN PRISON

A youth who defiled and impregnated a schoolgirl during the Coronavirus (COVID-19)-induced lockdown, has been sentenced to five years in prison.

Gift Kisaame, 22, reportedly committed the offence between 2020 and 2022 when schools were closed due to the pandemic.

He is said to have defiled Doroka Mutesi, who at the time was a 17-year-old student.

Both are residents of Buwenge town council in Jinja district.

Passing judgment yesterday, Justice Winfred Nabisinde observed that defilement carries a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.

However, she noted that the convict was a young person who had just attained maturity and deserved a reformatory sentence.

Nabisinde said Kisaame’s act exposed the victim to risks of contracting sexually transmitted infections.

She added that it exposed her to a pregnancy at such a tender age, putting her life at great risk.

She, however, ordered that the eleven months and seven days that the convict has spent on remand at Kirinya Prison in Jinja city, be considered part of the five years.
