The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) has announced a new collaboration with the Dairy Development Authority (DDA) to enhance the export of Ugandan milk and dairy products.
The partnership, announced on World Milk Day (June 1st), aims to assess potential new milk markets and strengthen the country’s dairy sector.
Under the collaboration, FAO, in conjunction with DDA, will lead a comprehensive assessment as part of the Monitoring and Analyzing Food and Agricultural Policies (MAFAP) program.
The assessment will identify dynamic export markets and recommend policy interventions and investments to position Uganda as a competitive supplier of milk and dairy products.
Marco V. Sánchez, the Deputy Director of Agrifood Economics at FAO, highlights the importance of boosting dairy exports and the transformation of the dairy sector.
Samson Akankiza, the Acting Executive Director at Dairy Development Authority, emphasizes the significance of milk in the economic transformation of households and childhood growth and health.
He appreciates the collaboration and states that DDA is focusing on increasing domestic milk consumption through the School Milk Program while expanding the export market portfolio to generate more earnings for cattle farmers.
Dr. Moses Ahimbisibwe the regional manager for DDA in South west says that even though milk production has raised domestic household milk consumption in Uganda falls short of the recommended intake.
