The government has said it will consider bringing in the Cuban vaccine, Abdala, when the World Health Organisation (WHO) approves it.
This follows a report by New York Times, an American newspaper, yesterday that the Cuban health authorities said that their three-shot Abdala vaccine has proven about 92 per cent effectiveness against Covid-19 in late-stage clinical trials.
Cuba started using its vaccine more than a month ago before it had completed the last stage of clinical trials, according to the American newspaper.
Prof Pontiano Kaleebu, the director of the Uganda Virus Research Institute (UVRI), who is also a member of the government vaccine advisory committee, told our reporter that Abdala is a viable option for the country.
Uganda is currently using AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccines, which it acquired through donations.
The Ministry of Health yesterday reported that a total of 834,271 people had been vaccinated in the exercise which was launched in March.
