Security forces have intensified patrols across the Kampala Metropolitan Area ahead of tomorrow’s swearing-in ceremony of President Yoweri Museveni for his seventh elective term in office.
Throughout the night, heavily armed police officers and soldiers were deployed on major roads and in several city suburbs, including areas that are not usually under heavy security surveillance.
Security personnel reportedly conducted stop-and-search operations targeting individuals they considered suspicious, particularly young people. Those unable to properly identify themselves were reportedly taken to nearby police stations for further questioning.
Meanwhile, the president of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), Patrick Amuriat, has confirmed that neither he nor the party leadership will attend the presidential swearing-in ceremony despite receiving invitations from the ruling National Resistance Movement.
Amuriat described the invitation as a mockery to the opposition, arguing that the recently concluded 2026 general elections were characterized by intimidation and electoral malpractice.
Although Yoweri Museveni was declared winner of the 2026 presidential election with 71 percent of the vote, Amuriat said the FDC does not recognize the election results.
He added that the party would not participate in what it views as attempts to legitimize Museveni’s next term in office.
Amuriat further accused the NRM of inviting opposition leaders to the ceremony as part of a public relations campaign aimed at portraying Uganda as a democratic state before the international community.
