The Inspectorate of Government (IG) has arrested Rakai district authorities and their suspected accomplices over the diversion of desks meant for government-aided schools under the Universal Primary Education (UPE) programme.

Deputy Chief administrative officer (CAO) Edward Kamya, former district vice-chairperson Ismael Bwanika and district education officer Stephen Ssemutono are among those that were arrested yesterday.

Rakai Resident District Commissioner Sarah Kiyimba, who was behind the arrest of the affected district authorities and their suspected accomplices confirmed the arrest of the suspects.

A source from the IG office said the suspects will be referred to the Anti-Corruption Court in Kampala.

Last week, Rakai district council vice-chairperson Ismael Bwanika was summoned by Police to answer queries concerning the alleged diversion of government furniture allocated to UPE primary schools under the School Facilities Grant (SFG).

The police swung into action and impounded the desks after they were located in a neighbouring private secondary school at Kiganda in Luanda sub-county in Rakai district.

The desks were meant for the Church of Uganda-founded Kiganda Primary School under the UPE program.

Southern Police region spokesperson, Twaha Kasirye told Endigyito radio that the desks were collected from the affected school and handed over to Rakai Central Police Station as exhibits.
