A total of 800 special guests including high-profile foreign dignitaries have been invited to attend Uganda’s 61st Independence Day anniversary celebrations set for October 9, in Kitgum district.

The invited guests include 41 individuals who will receive medals for their distinguished roles in liberating Uganda and contributions to the development of the country.

Briefing Parliament on the Independence Day celebrations, Minister for the Presidency Milly Babalanda said all the 800 special guests will be required to do COVID-19 tests.

Besides the 800 specially invited guests, Babalanda noted that all members of the public are welcome to attend the celebrations and will not be subjected to COVID-19 tests as is the case for those who will sit near the president.

The theme for this year’s celebrations is: Sustaining a United and Progressive Nation: Taking Charge of Our Future as a Free Nation.

It was on October 9th, 1962, that Uganda gained its independence from the British and this marked the end of the British colonial administration and Uganda became a sovereign nation with its own government.
