Two men suspected to be Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF) soldiers are currently admitted at Mulago National Referral Hospital for treatment under police watch after being rescued from a mob attack on allegations of robbing Shs80 million from two bank agents.

A Centenary Bank agent Ronald Sserugga, 38 and resident of Kawanda Kirinyabigo village in Wakiso District was allegedly trailed and intercepted at around 12:23am by four gunmen dressed in army uniform before being robbed.

It is alleged that Sserugga was driving with one Elly Nahurira, another agent banker and on their way to deposit the money at Equity bank main branch at Church House in Kampala when their vehicle was intercepted by the gunmen in Nabweru Division, Nansana Municipality in Wakiso District.

Kampala Metropolitan Police deputy spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire told journalists that the thieves thereafter told the victims to follow them to police but when the victims saw that the thieves were not heading to police station side, they knocked the thieves’ vehicle from behind until the thieves lost control and plunged into a trench.

Two of the gunmen got out of the vehicle and ran away with a laptop and a bag containing the money, according to police and the other two were, however, intercepted by bystanders and community members.

The two suspected robbers identified as Ronald Kaweesi and Erick Tumuwine, a UPDF soldier attached to Magamaga engineering brigade in Iganga District in eastern Uganda were beaten to near death by a mob before being rescued by police which rushed them to Mulago National Referral Hospital for treatment as police hunt for their alleged accomplices.

Relatedly, Police in western Uganda are investigating an incident where unknown gunmen, dressed in army uniforms, robbed a shop of Shs25 million.

The incident occurred in Kyenjojo District’s Katooke Trading Center at around 9pm on October 29, 2023.

According to CCTV footage obtained by police, three criminals, each in UPDF uniform- and armed with an AK-47 SMG rifle, entered a shop owned by 35-year-old John Rwatooro and made off with the money.

The victim is a resident of Katooke Town Council in the same district.

Rwenzori West Police spokesperson Vicent Twesige, noted that upon entering the shop, the gunmen overpowered the shop owner and stole the money.

Rwatooro, who was unharmed after the incident, reported to Kyenjojo Police Station on the following day, according to police documents.

Twesige told journalists in a brief statement that as of now, the suspects remain at large, and no one has been arrested.
