Police arrests enumerator over loss of census tablet

In Luwero district, an enumerator has been arrested by the police for the theft of a tablet, just before the census operation was set to begin on Thursday. The Uganda Bureau of Statistics had deployed 1532 enumerators and 192 supervisors in Luwero district for the National Population Census, with each enumerator equipped with a tablet for data recording. However, a tablet designated for the enumeration of residents in Kikube village, Luwero sub-county, was reported stolen shortly after the start of the exercise.

Richard Ssimbwa, the LC 3 Chairperson of Luwero sub-county, stated that the tablet was allegedly stolen from the home of the enumerator, who resides in Bukalasa zone, Wobulenzi town. The matter has been reported to the police and district authorities to track down the tablet or replace it to ensure the census exercise is not disrupted.

John Ojokuna, the Luwero District Police Commander, mentioned that upon receiving the report, police arrested Marvis Wamuzigo, the enumerator, for questioning regarding the theft. Wamuzigo is currently detained at Luwero Central Police Station as investigations continue.

Richard Bwabye, the Luwero Resident District Commissioner, advised enumerators to keep all gadgets at nearby police stations if they lack security at home to prevent theft of government property. Luwero district and UBOS have not yet commented on the matter, but local authorities have indicated that Wamuzigo and the tablet will be replaced to ensure the census proceeds as planned. Luwero district and UBOS have also registered 36 reserve enumerators in case of emergencies.

Across the country, the Uganda Bureau of Statistics has recruited 114,460 enumerators and 18,483 supervisors for the census exercise, set to begin the following day.
