The Office of the Clerk to Parliament has scheduled May 25th, 2026 as the date on which the newly sworn-in Members of Parliament shall elect their Speaker and Deputy Speaker to steer the House for the next five years.
In the announcement delivered by Peter Odeke, who serves in the office of the Clerk at Parliament, it was also stated that this shall be the first business the 12th Parliament conducts.
The MPs who have expressed interest in dislodging Ms Among include; Norbert Mao (MP elect Laroo-Pece) Ms Lydia Wanyoto (Woman MP elect Mbale City) and Persis Namuganza (Bukono County).
On Tuesday, President Museveni’s son and chairperson of the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba who serves as the Chief of Defence (CDF), retracted the quasi-political movement’s endorsement for incumbents Among and her deputy Thomas Tayebwa, for their candidature of the said positions in the 12th Parliament.
The formal transition to 12th Parliament began yesterday, as 184 newly elected Members of Parliament took their oaths of office in a structured, alphabetical ceremony at Parliament House.
Clerk to Parliament Adolf Mwesige Kasaija, supported by 21 clerk assistants, administered the oaths, marking the first step in constituting the new legislative body following the January 2026 general elections.
