Chad’s ruling military council has rejected an offer of ceasefire talks with rebels it has been fighting since the unexpected death of President Idriss Déby.

The military council took power earlier this week after Déby was killed during clashes with rebels.

Headed by Déby’s son, the council said it would oversee an 18-month transition to elections.

Opposition politicians and rebels have condemned the army takeover as a coup.

Déby, 68yrs, had just won a presidential election when the army announced on Tuesday that he had been fatally wounded in a battle with rebel fighters in the northern Kanem region of the country, in Central Africa.
