COURT-3d268c05

A 30 year- old- man has been convicted for aggravated defilement of his daughter-in-law.

Daniel Okwir raped his 20-year-old daughter-in-law despite her being pregnant.

According to the prosecution, in May 2015, the victim who was 15 years old then was cohabiting with Okwir’s sons.

In February 2020, Okwir lured the victim into his house when she requested 1,000 shillings to buy charcoal while in the house, Okwir defiled the girl and threatened to kill her if she reported the matter.

The prosecution also adds that when Okwir was arrested, he was subjected to medical examination and it was discovered that he was HIV positive.

While appearing before the Lira Resident Justice Duncan Gaswaga on Tuesday, Okwir pleaded guilty to the crime and asked the court to pardon him saying he has to take care of his children and two brothers because they are total orphans but Jonathan Okello, the state prosecutor asked the court to give a deterrent sentence to the convict.

However, Herbert Walusimbi, the victim’s lawyer, asked the court to be lenient when sentencing the convict, noting that the convict was not aware of his HIV status at the time he committed the crime.

Justice Gaswaga remanded Okwir until Thursday when he will be sentenced.
