The archbishop of Kampala Catholic archdiocese Dr Cyprian Kizito Lwanga has passed away.
It is said that he was found dead in his room today morning 3rd April 2021.
Lwanga was part of yesterday’s way of the cross prayers.
According to the Secretary General of the Episcopal Conference Monsignor John Baptist Kauta, Dr Lwanga was found dead yesterday morning at his residence at Lubaga.
President Museveni has joined a growing list of government officials, opposition politicians and other members of the public to eulogize the Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Kampala, Dr Cyprian Kizito Lwanga who died yesterday morning at 68.
The ICT Minister, Judith Nabakooba in her condolence message called for calm and asked the public to refrain from spreading speculations and what she described as false rumors about the death of the Archbishop.
Lwanga’s last public appearance was on Friday at Namirembe Cathedral where he led the way of the cross joined by the Archbishop of Uganda, Dr Samuel Kaziimba Mugalu in the way of the cross that took place at Namirembe Cathedral.
The Anglican Church in Uganda has said they have been shocked by the sudden death of Kampala Archbishop Dr. Cyprian Kizito Lwanga.
In a statement released yesterday, the Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, Dr Samuel Steven Kaziimba Mugalu who spent the most part of Friday with Lwanga during the way of the cross at Namirembe Cathedral said he was shocked by the sudden death of the man of God.
In addition National Unity Platform (NUP) president, Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine said it was “a dark day for the Catholic Church, and a dark day for Uganda.
Former Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) president, Dr Kizza Besigye noted that after leading the Uganda Joint Christian Council on the Way of The Cross and celebrating mass on Friday, he did not know that the bishop had retired to join the Lord.
It was said that Lwanga had been sick for some days last week but by Friday he was in good health.
According to Father Phillip Odi, the spokesperson of the Episcopal Conference, it is suspected that he could have died of a heart attack after a hectic Friday.
Lwanga was born January 19, 1953 in Kyabakadde Kyampisi sub county Mukono district, and ordained as priest on April 9 1978.
On November 30th 1996 he was appointed the Bishop of Kasana Luwero, the position he held up to September 30th ‘ 2006 when he assumed the office of the Archbishop of Kampala after the retirement of Cardinal Emmanuel Wamala.
