Health experts have warned the consumption of ginger and pepper as a preventive remedy of Covid-19 can cause serious health complications.
Doctor Faith Nakiyimba, a General Medical Practitioner and Masaka District Health Officer says they have noted with concern the widespread use of local herbal concoctions by people who are however not taking any precautions.
In the wake of the second wave of high transmission of Covid-19, people have resorted to making their concoctions through the mixing of local plants, fruits and leaves, which include among others Gallic, Lemon fruits, Ginger and pepper into herbal-drug solutions they presume can fight off the virus.
However, Dr Nakiyimba says that although some of the concoctions are rich in vitamins and minerals which are required in boosting body immunity; one way of creating resistance against infections, they can cause opportunistic health complications if not taken with precaution.
She explains that for instance, taking in excess and highly concentrated lemon, pepper, and ginger can become highly corrosive to present risks of causing harm to the gut and boils into the intestines, resulting in ulcers.
Nakiyimba has equally cautioned people against the practice of self-medication, indicating that they received reports of people who are taking drug prescriptions from healed Covid-19 patients, which she says may result in very adverse side effects.
