Members of the Defense and Internal Affairs Committee of Parliament have tasked the Police leadership to explain the recent events surrounding the re-arrest of members of Parliament.

Two legislators; Makindye West MP Allan Sewanyana and Kawempe North MP Muhammad Ssegirinya were arrested and detained on charges of murder, attempted murder and aiding and abetting terrorism, stemming from their alleged involvement in the recent killings in the Greater Masaka region.

This came out as the police team led by the Inspector General of Police Martin Okothappeared before the committee on Wednesday.

Kampala Woman MP Shamim Malende shares that security forces almost caused an accident when they tried to intercept her on the day that the Kawempe North MP Mohammed Ssegirinya was re-arrested.

The Inspector-General of Police Martin Okoth Ochola acknowledged that it is unprofessional to handle people brutally and added that individual officers need to be held responsible.

The Deputy CID Director Paul Kato said that although the police were in charge of the initial arrest of the MP’s, the force was not a party to the re-arrest.

The MPs also tasked the Police to explain their stand on bond and bail, as the President fronts the proposal to deny bail.

Rubabo County MP Naboth Namanya said the Spokesperson of Police Fred Enanga had already started intimidating policemen and women not to grant bail to suspects.

However, Police Spokesperson Fred Enanga said that he did not encourage police to deny bail to anyone, but reiterated what he said during the security press briefing that the Police Human Rights department had been asked to review the position of Police in regards to giving bail.
