MAKERERE UNIVERSITY EXPLAINS THE PHASING OUT OF ABOUT 20 COURSES

Makerere University has explained the phasing out of 19 courses effective 2020/2021 academic year.

The Vice Chancellor Prof Barnabas Nawangwe in an interview said that the move is meant to eliminate duplication, ensure harmonization and reduction of teaching load on staff to allow them do research.

Nawangwe says some of the affected courses are offered by other universities so they should be given a chance to take on interested students.

Meanwhile, according to the Director Quality Assurance, Dr Vincent Sembatya says courses that have about 40% similar curriculum content have been merged.

He adds that some courses like computer engineering will be merged with Bachelor of Electrical Engineering; Business Statistics will be merged with Statistics, while Development Economics will be merged with Economics.

The phased out courses include Bachelor of Science in Horticulture, Archives and Record Management, Science and Constructive Management, Computer Engineering, Human Nutrition, Meteorology, Wildlife Health and Management, Adult and Community Education, Agricultural Extension Education and Bachelor of Arts in Development Economics.

Others are Bachelor of Community Psychology, Development Studies Industrial and Organizational Psychology, Business Statistics, Conservation Biology, Science in Telecommunication Engineering, Quantitative Economics, Agricultural and Rural Innovation and Library and Information Sciences.
