The Mbarara District chief Administrative Officer David Muhwezi is still detained at Mbarara Central Police station following his arrest yesterday on orders of District Public Accounts Committee over land issues.
The Chief Administrative Officer was directed by committee chaired by Herbert Kamugiaha to record a police statement for allegedly allocation of land without following the required procedure.
Kamugisha made the directive during the Accounts committee meeting at the district headquarters over audit queries from the 2024/2025 financial year.
Kamugisha said the decision followed findings in the internal auditor’s report that various parcels of district land at Kamukuzi were allocated to different institutions, including Uganda Management Institute, Makerere University Business School, Megger Technical Services, the Ministry of Internal Affairs (Mbarara Regional analytical laboratory), the Office of the Solicitor General, Police Barracks, the Inspector General of Government, Education Standards and KIU.
Kamugisha said the committee also resolved that Muhwezi steps aside from his office for investigations noting that inquiries into the matter should proceed without interference.
The committee further ordered an immediate halt to any additional allocation of district land until investigations are completed and also be provided with a comprehensive valuation report for all government land located on Kamukuzi Hill.
Kamugisha ordered for reevaluation of the allocated land after it was reported that the district bosses have allegedly been leasing some of the land at rates as low as UGX 30 million per acre.
