The number of people dying as compared to the estimated population in the country has reduced, according to a new report by the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS).

The 2022 Uganda Demographic and Health Survey (UDHS) reveals that the under-5 mortality rate has reduced from 64/1,000 live births in 2016 to 52/1,000 live births in 2022.

Also, the infant mortality rate has also reduced from 43/1,000 live births in 2016 to 36/1,000 live births in 2022.

On the Neonatal mortality rate, the reduction is from 27/1,000 live births in 2016 to 22/1,000 live births in 2022.

According to health ministry permanent secretary Dr Diana Atwine, the reduction was due to the joint efforts put up by the health team from across the country.

According to the last UDHS, infant and under-five mortality rates were 76/1,000 and 137/1,000 live births respectively.

The same report (2022) says the average number of children that a Ugandan woman gives birth to over her lifetime aka fertility rate, has dropped.

The report ranks Karamoja region as having the most fertile women in Uganda followed by Bukedi, Busoga, Bunyoro and Toro.

On the other hand, the areas with the lowest rates are Kampala, Lango, Ankole and Kigezi.
