Authorities in Ibanda District are investigating a gruesome incident in which a local leader was beheaded.
Gumisiriza Jackson, who served as the LC1 Defence Secretary for Nyabigoye 2 cell in Bihanga Parish, Nyamarebe Sub-County for 40 years, was killed on his way home from a nearby trading centre.
Barigye Amos, the LC1 Chairperson for Nyabigoye cell, confirmed the identity of the deceased to our reporter.
The fatal attack allegedly occurred on Saturday evening. Assailants ambushed Gumisiriza at his gate as he returned from the Nyabigoye trading centre, decapitating him before fleeing the crime scene.

The horrific discovery was made the following morning. Gumisiriza’s younger brother went to check on him because the deceased had been unwell. He was shocked to find the body at the gate, while the head had been dumped some distance away. He immediately alerted the LC1 chairperson and other local authorities.

In the aftermath, residents mobilized and arrested four suspects. According to Barigye, all four suspects are relatives of the deceased. They have since been handed over to the police for further investigation.

Godfrey Mbetegyereize, the Ibanda Resident District Commissioner (RDC), commended the residents of Nyabigoye for refraining from mob justice. However, he noted that Nyabigoye cell has now been classified as a “black zone” due to rising insecurity in the area.
