Ntungamo district veterinary officials have instituted an animal and animal products movement quarantine within the district following the outbreak of foot and mouth disease.
Two sub counties of Rweikiniro and Ngoma, the biggest animal sub counties have been completely banned with even domestic consumption of animal products only allowed under regulation by the village chairperson, veterinary staff and security officials.
The district veterinary officer Dr Yake Basulira says the ban follows a recent outbreak of foot and mouth disease in the district, also ravaged by several other animal diseases including lumpy skin, Poxvirus and a threat of Anthrax.
The ban on cattle markets however affects the farmers and traders negatively with some arguing that this shall add to the mounting economic challenges.
The bad affects the marketing of over a million liters of milk produced daily in the district and over 200 animals slaughtered in the district daily. It also affects movement of over 800 animals moved from Ntungamo district mainly to the central part of the country for sale.
