OVER 30 POLICE OFFICERS TRAINED IN HUMAN RIGHTS

At least 30 police and other security officials in Ntungamo district have received training from the Uganda human rights commission on handling cases and suspects with dignity and general human rights issues.

The training meant to assess the post election environment was also meant to create further awareness of the human rights enforcement act 2019 which makes violators of human rights in any institution individually liable to abuses than institutions they represent.

Officiating at the opening of the day-long workshop, the Mbarara regional human rights commission manager Caroline Gumoshabe cautioned police officers against going overboard in trying to get information from suspects because it even would not stand in courts of law.

The senior human rights officer and editor of the Uganda human rights commission RoseMary Kemigisha asked officers to always ensure they are acting within the confines of the law even if faced with whatever circumstances to avoid criminal liability while thinking they are breaking criminality.

Closing the workshop, the Ntungamo deputy resident district Commissioner Isaiah Kanyamahane commended the UHRC for efforts towards training security officials in human rights protection and criminality as most may be ignorant of the laws they operate in.
