OVERCROWDING LED TO MOROTO PRISON BREAK, SAYS FORMER INMATE BESIGYE

As the ground and aerial manhunt for more than 200 inmates who overpowered their guards and escaped from Singila Prison with weapons after a shootout in Moroto district continues, political demagogue Dr Kizza Besigye has said that the prison break may have been caused by overcrowding of the prison.

The four time presidential contender who was once an inmate at the facility said yesterday that at the time he was detained at the facility after the 2016 contested elections, he found it overcrowded.

Dr Besigye tweeted that he was imprisoned in Moroto Prison after the 2016 overthrown election and overcrowding in this prison was far beyond what he has witnessed in other prisons where he has been remanded in over the years which is likely to be a factor in the breakout.

Frank Baine, the prisons spokesperson said yesterday that a total of 219 inmates managed to escape with 15 guns from the facility which houses 620 prisoners.

He added at least three inmates have been killed and seven others recaptured.
