Buganda Women Voice Action (BUWOVA) a civil society organization defending women in Buganda region is under attack for empowering women as far as their rights are concerned.
BUWOVA’s director Ms Irene Babirye has been summoned to police to explain the organization’s activities after receiving complaints from locals especially men that wives have started failing to carry out their duties in homes and stopping men from selling their marital property thus making men inferior.
Fred Enanga the Uganda Police spokesperson says they will need to know the partners of BUWOVA and crucial documents regarding the NGO’s activities.
While speaking to our reporter, the Executive Director BUWOVA Ms. Irene Babirye says she is being harassed and some locals are just fighting the good impact that the NGO has done in promoting peace in Buganda region ever since it started.
She says there are a few people in the region who have been violating the rights of women and are the ones trumping up unnecessary accusations.
Ms. Irene asserts she will not accept to be threatened to stop doing the good work of voluntarily defending the rights of women whose rights are usually violated, denied justice and discriminated against.
She has further informed our reporter that BUWOVA’s offices have previously been attacked by unknown people who she referred to as cowards.
During the attack, computers and other crucial documents were taken away where she suspects that people who are fighting the organization must be behind this attack.
She says that matter was reported to police but it has not done much to arrest the suspects or recovery the stolen equipment.
