A suspected Rwandan smuggler has been shot dead by unknown people in Kisoro district.

The smuggler only identified as Eric was allegedly shot at the Ugandan-Rwanda porous border of the Ghetto in Mupaka village, Chahafi town council.

Residents told our reporter on condition of anonymity that the deceased was shot while crossing to Rwanda carrying smuggled goods that belong to a businessman in Rwanda only identified as Jimmy.

They say that the deceased could have been shot by security operatives on the Ugandan side deployed in the area.

Daniel Kwitonda, the Mupaka LC1 Chairman said that he was alerted by the sound of gunshots.

He says that on reaching the scene, he alerted police officers attached to the nearby Murora sub-county and Chanika border for intervention.

Hadard Nkuzimana, the Chahafi Town Council LCIII Chairperson attributes the incident to rampant cases of smuggling especially illicit alcohol to Rwanda from Uganda.

He asked Ugandan security authorities to establish a police post at the porous border to reduce cases of illegal entry.
