THREE FAMILY MEMBERS ARE IN POLICE CUSTODY IN ISINGIRO DISTRICT OVER FAMILY PROPERTY WRANGLES

Police in Isingiro district are holding three family members over harassment of the widow a week after the death of her husband.

It is alleged that the three have been chasing the widow by the names of Christine Namara out of her deceased husband Property which included their marital house, land and Banana Plantation.

The Rwizi region police spokesperson Samson Kasasira identified the three as Robert Katusiime, Steven Mugyenyi and Jackline Natumanya all the In-laws of Namara and resident of Endinzi Sub county Isingiro district.

Kasasira says that the three were netted after complaint which was reported by a women human rights group Women Rights Forum Uganda (WRF- UG).

The police say that the three are in police custody to help in investigations and soon they will be arraigned in court.

When contacted, Kyomukama Cleophas the Executive Director Women Rights Forum Uganda (WRF- UG) told our reporter that Namara approached them for assistance in the matter where the family members had connived to chase her away from the family property a week after the death of her husband.

Kyomukama, says as its their mandate to fight for the rights of women, they swung into action and reported the matter to police which arrested some of the family members who were spearheading the matter.

According to Kyomukama,WRF-UG is ready to provide any assistance including legal help to Namara after the case goes to court until she gets justice.

Kyomukama says such cases of violating rights of women especially owning family property after the death of husbands are in the rise in the area calling upon the government to enact the law which protects rights of widows on family property.
