Despite recent challenges and delays, the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) has reaffirmed its commitment to conducting the National Population Census in 2024.
The announcement made during the Uganda Statistical Society and UBOS seminar at the Statistics House, brings renewed assurance to various stakeholders and the public at large.
Chris Mukiza, the Chief Statistician and Executive Director of UBOS, addressed concerns and emphasised that the organization is diligently working to ensure that all necessary preparations are in place.
Mukiza said the previous postponement, attributed to funding issues, has not deterred the bureau’s determination or its timeline.
However, the Bureau is still waiting for Cabinet to announce a new date for the census but Mukiza is confident it will happen in January 2024.
He noted that Uganda remains compliant with the UN’s 2020 guidelines regarding census conduct.
The United Nations, in its directive for the 2020 round, mandates that member states conduct a national census every decade.
This regular ten-year interval is deemed essential for ensuring that countries have accurate and up-to-date data for efficient planning and resource allocation.
