The minister of Security Jim Muhwezi has criticised his fellow the internal affairs minister Kahinda Otafiire and called him a liar over digital number plates.
On Tuesday, internal affairs minister Kahinda punched holes in the government’s project to roll out digital number plates.
Kahinda distanced himself from the project, and made bold statements, including one that the Russian company supposed to handle the project, failed the due diligence rating by a team from the Uganda Police and his ministry was not privy to any details of the project which was meant to be rolled out by July 1st.
However, Security minister Jim Muhwezi, who took issue with his fellow minister’s statement, hit back.
Muhwezi called Otafiire a liar and said the internal affairs minister has not only attended all meetings discussing the project at cabinet level, but his ministry is also helping to implement the same.
Meanwhile, state Minister of Works and Transport Fred Byamukama has said the Government will delay the implementation of the digital number plate rollout until October.
He said the delay is to give time for the Government to sensitise the public about the importance and relevance of the service towards road safety and security.
According to the arrangements, every car or motorcycle owner will fork out sh735,000 for the new digital number plate.
Currently, Ugandans are paying about 190,000 for the number plate services.
