Crocodile Kills Fisherman on Lake Edward

A 30-year-old man has tragically lost his life in a crocodile attack on Lake Edward in Kasese District.

The victim, identified as Andres Mumbere from Rwenjubu Ward in Katwe-Kabatoro Town Council, was reportedly fishing on April 19 when a crocodile suddenly emerged and launched a fatal attack.

According to Robert Agumywa, a fellow fisherman, Mumbere cried out for help during the struggle, but nearby fishermen were too far to intervene in time.

Nelson Tumushime, spokesperson for the Rwenzori East police, confirmed the incident. He stated that with the help of local fishermen, police were able to retrieve Mumbere’s body from the lake. Unfortunately, his remains were severely mutilated, with several limbs missing by the time of recovery.

Tumushime advised the fishing community to steer clear of known crocodile breeding zones along the lake’s shoreline. He added that the police marine unit will maintain regular patrols to enhance safety and curb illegal fishing operations.

This is not an isolated case. In October last year, another fisherman—28-year-old Kule Felex Gaddafi—was killed in a similar crocodile attack while fishing in the same area. Authorities are now urging all fishermen to exercise extreme caution, particularly when operating near crocodile-infested zones.
