The Minister of Local Government, Raphael Magyezi, has officially issued the schedule for the transition of power within Local Government Councils following the recently concluded general elections.
In a letter dated April 13, 2026, the ministry clarified the expiration dates for current leadership and the swearing-in window for newly elected officials.
The term of office for current Local Government Councils is set to expire on May 12, 2026, the day the President is expected to be sworn in.
Magyezi has directed all outgoing chairpersons and mayors to prepare comprehensive reports detailing their tenure and to hand over all government assets currently in their possession to their respective Chief Administrative Officers or town clerks.
He said the newly elected councils will officially assume office between May 13, 2026, and May 29, 2026.
Chief Administrative Officers and town clerks have been tasked with overseeing the transition to ensure it remains “smooth and orderly” and complies with the Local Governments Act.
