KUMI DIOCESE SKIRMISHES CONTINUE AS REV OKUNYA RESIGNS

Rev. Charles Okunya Oode has tendered his resignation to the newly installed Bishop of Kumi Diocese, Michael Okwii Esakan.

Okunya has resigned from both his priestly duties and the appointment as Director of Education Services in Kumi Diocese, according to the spokesperson, Jonathan Maraka.

In his resignation letter, Rev. Okunya indicates that he intends to go for further studies and take leave until such a time when God communicates his next course of action.

Rev. Okunya became famous in November 2019 when the House of Bishops elected him as the successor to the founder bishop of Kumi Diocese, Rt. Rev. Thomas Edison Irigei.

However, prior to his consecration and enthronement that was scheduled for December, the same house announced investigations into his appointment.

The then Archbishop, Stanley Ntagali blocked Rev. Okunya from ascending to the bishop’s seat and barred him from taking part in the Bishop’s race in the Anglican Church.

Since then, Kumi Diocese registered scenes of violence from Rev. Okunya’s supporters, which led to the arrest of both the laity and clergymen.

The scenes climaxed in January this year when a group of Christians loyal to Rev. Okunya attempted to install him as a bishop.

However, Rev. Okunya, through his close friends indicated that his appointment and retention as Director of Education Services seems to have been a trap.
