Police in Jinja District are investigating circumstances under which a Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) sergeant was last evening shot dead and two SMG rifles robbed by unknown assailants who raided Gaddafi Barracks.
The soldier was reportedly one of the guards at the barracks’ small gate when the attack happened.
The attackers raided when the second guard had left his gun with the deceased to buy cigarettes.
Police said the “cowardly attack” is being investigated.
According to police, the alleged attack was against a UPDF officer manning the entry checkpoint at Gaddafi Barracks, who was killed and two guns robbed.
This is the third attack on security installations in less than a month.
Earlier this month, armed assailants attacked Busiika Police station in Luweero district at the start of the month and left two officers killed on the spot and their guns taken.
The attack has since been attributed to a rebel group identified as Uganda Forces for Coalition Change.
