More than 30 people are feared dead after a boat they were travelling in capsized on the River Nguse in Kagadi district last night at around 8:00 pm.
The dozens who are residents of Kyareeni Cell, Kamata Ward in Pacwa Town Council were still missing by press time, and a search for them was being conducted.
They were reportedly returning from home from Bugoma Forest, where they had been engaged in charcoal burning.
River Nguse separates Kagadi and Kikuube districts.
As of this afternoon, Marine Police had arrived at the river to join the search efforts, and hundreds of residents and relatives of the suspected victims had pitched camp at the river to witness how the event would unfold.
Area residents say the boat was loaded with several people and sacks of charcoal when it capsized.
Unconfirmed reports have it that eight people survived the accident because they were able to swim through.
Mary Mugisa, the LC1 Chairperson of Kyareeni Cell, said his son is among the missing persons.
He added that one survivor confirmed that only eight people escaped, mainly those who could swim.
Justus Businge, the LC3 Chairperson of Pacwa Town Council, described the situation as a recurring problem that has been cautioned about before to be careful while crossing the river.
