The High Court in Kampala has today 30th April 2026 sentenced Christopher Okello Onyum to death after he was found guilty of the murder of four toddlers at Ggaba Early Childhood Development Centre, bringing to a close one of the Uganda’s most disturbing criminal trials in recent memory.
After hearing from both the prosecution and defence teams, Justice Alice Komuhangi Khaukha, who presided over the 10-day active court proceedings said prosecution had proved their case beyond reasonable doubt that Okello was guilty of killing of four toddlers at the daycare centre, an offence he described as the first of its kind in the country.
Justice Komuhangi said that after reviving all aggravating factors, she found no reason not to give Okello a maximum sentence.
According to the judge, Okello has a right to appeal against his conviction and sentence within 14 days from the day of his sentence.
The audience at the venue broke into emotional celebrations and applause when Justice Komuhangi read the sentence.
Okello murdered Gideon Eteku, Keisha Agenorwoth Otim, Ignatius Sseruyange and Ryan Odeke on April 2nd, 2026 after attack at Ggaba Early Childhood Development Daycare Centre.
