COL MWESIGYE DECLEARED NRM FLAG BEARER FOR NYABUSHOZI AS RIVALS PULL OUT OF THE RACE

MWESIGYE-FRED-0e721827

The NRM electoral commission has cancelled primary elections for Nyabushozi County after two of the contestants pulled out of the race.

As a result, the incumbent MP, Col Fred Mwesigye, has been declared the winner of the NRM flag in the area.

The primary elections in the area were to be repeated in 26 villages today after the earlier one held on September 5th had been cancelled over voter bribery, intimidation and malpractice.

But Yesterday, Wilson Kajwengye and Christopher Bakashaba, who were Col Mwesigye’s main rivals, wrote to the NRM EC that they were pulling out of the repeated election, citing failure by the ruling party to put in place the required measures to ensure free and fair elections.

Dr Tanga Odoi, the NRM Electoral Commission chairman, confirmed that the election for Nyabushozi has been cancelled after the main contenders pulled out.

The initial results released on September 5th 2020 had given Col Mwesigye a lead against Kajwengye while Christopher Bakashaba came third.

Kajwengye challenged the results and the president later intervened and set up a team of investigators whose report indicated that there were 56 villages whose results were changed.

President Museveni then directed that fresh voting be conducted in the 28 villages.
