Makerere University is seeking 2 Billion Shillings for the Centennial Celebrations.
The university is considering using part of the funds to renovate halls of residence, staff offices, and classroom blocks that are dilapidated as some of these structures have not been renovated for more than 15 years.
Lumumba Hall, for instance, has an entire block cordoned off because of its dilapidated state.
Professor Barnabas Nawangwe, the Vice-Chancellor of Makerere University, says that part of the funds for the celebrations will be used to give a facelift to the structures, however declined to reveal how much is needed for the works.
Engineer Christina Kakeeto, the Director in charge of Estates at Makerere says that water distribution, storage, and electrical systems will also need revamping.
Since the launch of the centennial celebrations last year in October, the university has been soliciting funds from alumni and well-wishers to aid its plans.
The reconstruction of the main building which the University hopes will be completed before October had its budget covered by the government.
Some of the other contributions have come from corporate companies like MTN Uganda which donated 180 Million Shillings, Absa which donated 65 Million Uganda Shillings.
