Mbarara city councilors have tasked the city mayor Robert Mugabe kakyebezi and the city clerk, Assy Abireebe Tumwesigire to account for the funds used to repair Katete Bridge.
Mbarara city council released 5.1 million shillings to repair the bridge which is in bad shape.
Yesterday, during a council meeting, the councilors asked the city mayor, who is the minister for works and the city clerk to explain how the money was spent.
The Councilors argued that the bridge is in bad shape regardless of the repairs.
Eunice Asiimwe, the multipurpose committee chairperson informed council that her committee received three contradicting figures of the money spent on the bridge repairs and that the public is demanding the accountability of the money, but have no answers on how funds were utilized.
Byansi Muhammad the councilor representing Nyamityobora ward A and B at the city questioned what the money was used for noting that the budget was inflated.
In his remarks, Robert Mugabe kakyebezi the city Mayor disclosed to councilors that the money was spent on procuring new plates met to fix the bridge.
He added several interventions have been made on the bridge but still it needs urgent attention from the central government.
He said that as council their hands are tied thus asked the area members of Parliament to engage the minister for works on the matter.
